May 2022, on his own channel: a 12-minute video, “Building the future of communication!” The working name in that era was “roots.” The comparison target, even then, was Discord. He had been “building voice communication apps” since childhood. The company would take years of closed work and a seed round before a public client.

X bio, 2026: “Founder @rootappofficial previously @microsoft @xamarinhq.” The Microsoft line does a lot of work in a category full of weekend Discord clones. It does not make the terms nicer.

June 2026, Episode 1. Why closed source? Competitors will steal the edge. Why no browser? Electron is slow, native is virtue, a web client is intended. Why no self-host? They wanted it easy for non-technical people; they are thinking deeply. Why sell data? They do not, never have, it was a rumor about placeholders.

That last answer is the one that matters. The archived policy is dated, public, and specific. A founder who will look into a camera and call a live legal document a placeholder will look into a camera and call the next one a philosophy. You do not need a secret recording. You need the Wayback Machine and a calendar.

Reddit, r/RootAppOfficial and r/BannedFromDiscord, February 2026: closed source, VC, TOS, encryption. u/HackTheDev, who runs DCTS, said the quiet version: investor-backed, same issues as Discord. u/RainOfPain125: “closed source slop… it will become Discord all over again.” Those comments are not evidence of a crime. They are the category noticing the rhyme.

If you would not hand a community to a company whose CEO, after a week of screenshots, told you the contract was a placeholder, you already understand the product.
